I am currently printing through the network. Sincerely not liking Gnome3 (even if all I'm using is libs and plugins vs the whole desktop).ĮDIT: The final step to all of this was removing the printer from cups/system-config-printer, rebooting and installing the printer via system-config-printer again. I've had small glitches before, but lately has been one glitch after another. I really feel like I'm using a test repo. The latest updates have really left me scratching my head about Gnome3. Gutenprint includes CUPS and Foomatic drivers, and an. When I connect, I get the error: "There was an error during CUPS operation: 'failed to connect to server'" and any program I try to print from only gives me the "print to file" option. These drivers provide high quality printing for UNIX, Linux, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 and above) systems. Start the service on this computer or connect to another server". but when I go to system-config-printer I get an error: "Printing service not available. I even printed a test page via CUPS web interface. Then "whola !" I discovered these drivers upon which I happily got rid of those old pieces of junk and feel quite certain that I will never have to revisit this nonsense ever again.I have installed my cannon mg5200 printer both via network and USB. Out of sheer frustration, I came SOOOOO close today to scrapping my whole updated system in favor of reverting to my OSX 10.5.6 (of which I had absolutely no issues printing at all once I spent a few days finagling and coercing it to work from the previous update) system backup because this time around I just could not get them to work in OSX 10.5.7. In these tough economic times (in case anyone has forgotten), WHY in tarnation should I have to run out and buy a new printer when mine works perfectly fine if/when/ever the system drivers will operate correctly. I grew SOOOOO dag gone sick and tired of having to finagle and coerce the system drivers to work each and every time I updated to the newest version of OSX 10.5 (10.5.7 this time around).
I have a special fondness for the TurboPrint drivers for color inkjet and photo printers, which are often better than even the Gutenprint. Using vendor’s drivers doesn’t always translate to better quality: You’re often better off using CUPS’ Foomatic or Gutenprint drivers. The second form of the foomatic-ppdfile program will search the printer database and return either all printer entries or those whose name and/or model.
I still own/use a very reliable Epson Printer I bought brand new in 1997. Some support only a few models, and some are more generous.
